Step 3: pre production

Once the script is ready, the producer casts the show, finds a production manager to run logistics, assembles a cast, prepares a schedule for recording, and talks to the sound designer about how to capture the sound. They will decide whether to record in a studio or on location – this could be someone’s house, a building etc. The basic difference between studio and location is that you can control the sound more in studio, whereas location is more variable. Location allows the  actors to move freely I the space, you are recording the actual background of where the scene is set rather than adding it on in the mix. There are pros and cons to both approaches.

We also sometimes record remotely with actors online. This happens where the actor cannot join us in studio - possibly because they are in another country, or if a studio is not fully accessible for their needs.

We normally record about half an hour of audio drama per day, but can do more or less, depending on cast size, length of script etc. A standard BBC Radio 4 Afternoon Drama is usually recorded over 2 days.

We usually start with a read through of the full script, then work our way through each scene. We record about 3 takes, sometime more or less if we are pushed for time. The producer will decide which take they want to use, sometimes we patch a scene together with sections from lots of different takes.  The studio assistant will mark up the script so the sound designer knows which bits of which takes to use.

Role 3: Production Manager

A production manager organises the practicalities of contracts, sending out scripts and getting everyone to studio on time. Either they or a studio assistant, will be in studio, looking after  actors on the day, taking notes on which takes the producer wants in the mix and generally supporting the producer

They:

  • check actors that the producer is interested in, to see if they are free for recording dates

  • once producer has decided on cast, send out offers and script, studio information etc

  • arranges for refreshments and lunch for the studio

  • arranges contracts and collects the invoices after the studio
