Step 6: the mix

The sound designer puts together an initial mix of the speech with SFX and music.  The producer will listen and send comments, and the two usually spend time working together either in person at the sound designer’s edit suite, or remotely using online meeting software. It usually takes 3 or 4 mixes to complete  a drama. There may be original music from a composer, to specifically fit the drama.

Role 6

The composer creates and records original music for the drama. Music is used for opening titles before and closing credits after the drama, as underscore, and as music bridges between scenes. They:

• Discuss what music is wanted with producer

• Read the script and offer sketches of ideas

• Write and record the music to fit the durations the producer needs

• Deliver the music in the right format to the sound designer.
