Step 5: the speech assemble

Once all the speech has been recorded, the speech assemble is put together - this is simply the words in the right order with the bits of each take that the director producer has selected. This may be done by a speech assembler or the sound designer, before they start on the mix.

There are different ways of working but usually the sound designer puts together an initial mix where they combine the speech with SFX and music.  The producer will listen and send comments, and the two usually spend time working together either in person at the sound designer’s edit suite, or remotely using online meeting software.

It usually takes 3 or 4 mixes to complete  a drama.

Role 5

The sound designer is the person who creates the sound world that the drama sits in. They:

* take the speech that has been collected in studio and add in sound effects (SFX

* work with a composer or pre recorded music

* work with the producer to get the  drama to sound the best it possibly can.
